  • Immunizations Even Easier Starting February 1, 2013

Chicken Pox, Flu, Pneumonia and Shingles

Many of you have asked AA to make it easier for you to get immunizations. It can be difficult to make and keep a doctor's appointment for a flu shot or other immunization, whether due to work or travel schedules.

To meet this need, AA has contracted with the prescription drug manager for our medical plans, Express Scripts (formerly Medco), to cover certain immunizations administered at in-network retail pharmacies. Generally, no appointment is needed.

Beginning February 1, 2013, if you are enrolled in an American Airlines medical option, you and your covered family members can go to Express Scripts network pharmacies for certain immunizations and they will be covered at 100%. Depending on the vaccine, you could be given a shot or receive an oral medication.

    Covered immunizations include:

    • Flu shots, and
    • Preventive immunizations based on your age and gender

For example, the shingles vaccine is covered at 100% if you are age 60 or older. If you are between the ages of 50 - 59, the shingles vaccine is covered but you are responsible for your Rx coinsurance like any other drug.
Here's what you need to do:

    • Find an Express Scripts network pharmacy near where you live or where you are traveling*
      • Go Online Express-Scripts/Medco or
      • Call the number on the back of your Medco prescription drug ID card
    • Show your prescription drug ID card
    • Get your immunization

    * No appointment is necessary, but be sure to call first for vaccine availability, age restrictions and vaccination schedules.

Not all states allow pharmacists to administer all vaccines and some states require a prescription at the pharmacy. Contact your local participating pharmacy and find out what your state allows.
